I've been bad... :)

Lack of pics, lack of blog posts...my goodness I'm a really bad blogger!

From last weekend (Sept 26 - 27) on I was sick with the stomach flu - consider yourself warned that this flu is out there, so take good care of yourself!

The previous weekend, I was trying to clean up a calculator from the office - technology and apple juice do NOT mix well, please be careful with liquids, especially ones that get sticky as they dry (Ewww!) *lol*

I've been trying (and failing) at not spending money - damn you Etsy! :)  Investment time is slowly coming and I need to build up as much as I can.  And yes, I DO consider myself lucky that I actually have money invested (RRSP, TFSA, my "I need a home of my own" money) rather than living from paycheque to paycheque.  It's a great habit to get into, if you can manage it at all I definitely recommend it.  Even $10 per month put away in an account that's hard to take money out of adds up over time.  Everyone needs an emergency fund in case of life happening while you were making other plans...

Still looking for work in the same company I'm currently working for - 10 years is a lot of seniority to throw away - but not much is coming up.  I do have a meeting booked with the hiring officer in a department that I'm VERY interested in, so we'll see what happens.  networking.  A life-saver in the office world, or any work-world for that matter.  Make those connections, keep them going, and use them when you need to.  That last step is so hard, but everyone needs help of some sort, and it's not weakness to ask.  It may look like a "friend of a friend of a friend" kind of chain, but perhaps your co-worker or whomever just might know someone that knows someone in another area of your workplace that might be able to help you get a foot in the door...so-to-speak.  One thing to remember...always be ready to try and help someone else the same way if you can.  Pay it forward, return the favour, whatever, just don't be stupid enough to think that you can use people and not give something back!  Reputaions are broken that way, you know...  ;)

TTFN, must get back into the job hunt...

Blogs and shopping and job hunting

Oh my! *lol*

Looking for a new position within the company...not being given a choice as I have an end-of-October deadline. Knew this was coming, but it's still a kick in the head when it does, am I right? Watching my back for knives... ;)

Been looking up smoothie recipes on my fave site AllRecipes A totally fun place to hang out and make yourself hungry! Considering the switch from solid-food lunch (or would dinner be better?) to semi-liquid...not just for dieting (and I could stand to lose about 20lbs give or take), but from a health factor. Slowly trying to cut back on my obvious sugar intake and incorporate more "real foods" into my diet. The less procesed the better to my thinking, so this should be interesting. Trying to get a little more exercise in my day as well. I'm pretty good about taking stairs as opposed to escalators (sometimes even elevators), walking instead of transit, and getting enough wlaking time while at work (broken up into small intervals), but I certainly ned more. I'm going to try and get back into my weight routine - just basics with hand weights at home - and more walking. Due to being an arthritic old fart I need more low-impact routines than anything else, so I'm also thinking of trying some form of yoga as well. Flexibility is a good thing! *lol* I wonder if my eventual goal should be belly-dancing? Meh, let's just fit in more exercise and move on from there, shall we? Anyone familiar with my sewing promises and picture posting promises knows how much of a procrastinator I can be! :)

Shopping too much on Etsy...however, any of you with a leaning towards 1950s hats should take a look at a shop run by a friend of mine in New Jersey, Jan, at Briony Lodge Vintage on Etsy. She does sell from other eras (mainly the 1930s to the 1940s), but she is currently holding a "Closeout" sale of her more modern hats from the 1950s and 1960s, so hurry in and take a look around before the sale ends - and it will by the end of the month (July), if not before. Use her coupon code "TAKE10" (without the quotes) for an extra 10% off your purchase, and tell her I sent you! :)

Must get back to work now - I'd hate to get caught blogging in the office, especially now *lol* Have a terrific day y'all!!

Why so long between posts?

Actually, I don't really have an answer for that one. I really need to focus more on updating this blog at least once a week, even if I think I have not much to say - hell, I'm creative, I'd like to think I could drum up something from the old brain cells! *lol*

We had company from B.C. this past week - my Dad's friend from work, well, actually he's a family friend we've known since almost forever. Always great seeing him, but always sad when he leaves. We do keep in touch via phone and e-mail, but even I have to admit it's just not the same...am I right?

Dad's R.A. still flares up occasionally, especially during the strange and wet weather we've been having lately. He does have Osteoarthritis in his hands so it should come as no surprise, but I know it really bothers him physically and mentally. He still has that awful cough, partly due to quitting smoking after almost a lifetime of it, as well as the R.A. meds, but it had tamed down quite a bit in the past week - the curative effects of having an old friend around, perhaps? His stomach was doing better over the past couple of weeks or so (bad indigestion), but that flared up again yesterday. Mum and I figure it might be the different kind of eggs he had for breakfast, but we're really not sure. Of course, today (Monday) is Methotrexate day and he's really feeling it today - hopefully it doesn't spill over into tomorrow as it can do more often than not...

Mum is good, just needs to stop trying to hurt her knee more - she's clipped the ACL ligament more than once and is in a lot of pain at times. She's seriously considering going back for more physiotherapy which always helps.

Me? Same old, same old. Looking actively for another job at the same company as word finally came down from above - as of November 1st, my little group will be "streamlined" from 4 to 2. So long and thanks for all the fish! *lol* This came as no real surprise, I must admit, as I figured it was a matter of time ever since our physical move was announced over a year ago...but it still stings in any case. oh well, I'm hoping that with all the help that senior staff is offering to help us get a new job (yeah, right), this will help me finally move on to bigger and better things. At least, that's what I'm hoping, because after 10 years with this company (as of this coming September, and I am NOT throwing this little bit of seniority away!) I'd like to think all my work counts for something - even if it's a handshake goodbye ;) Wow, 10 years. 44 years of age. I never thought I'd have been here so long, or had such a difficult time getting out of the position I currently hold. That's the problem with being a good worker - they like you and the work you do so they hang onto you for as long as possible. Not that one should not aim for being a good worker - in a slightly higher starting position than mine (I'm pretty much at the bottom of the pond), it really does take you places! And I'm not being sarcastic...it's true. So be a good worker, learn everythign you can about your job, the company, and other jobs within that company to see where you'd like to go next. Take advantage of any and every training facility or opportunity they offer, it's well worth it.

Anywho, healthwise doing OK, iron still appears to be acceptable so no "top-ups" yet. Growing out the purple to give my hair a break, then I'll try something new. The bangs / fringe are working out well, especially once I had them trimmed so they weren't constantly in my eyes making me feel like Cousin It (thank you for the correction, Diamondback!). Still spending too much money - especially now that I'm in the vortex of "What do you mean 2 of us will become redundant??" - but having fun doing it (unfortunately). Still thinking of opening my Etsy shop to sell off some stuff - after all, why not make a couple of bucks rather than donate it (note: Canadians do not get tax breaks for donations of goods unlike most U.S. states. Something we should seriously consider, frankly speaking)?

Well, must get back to work to get un-buried from last week's offloading of nearly everything from everyone's desk. REALLY looking forward to my little bit of vacation time, but it can't come soon enough...you know what I mean? :)

Woot!

Red Dwarf is coming back!! Two more seasons of Rimmer and the gang!! Can you tell I'm a bit of a fan? Red Dwarf Was the series that kept me alive during a bad time in my life, and really made me fall in love with Britcoms in general. Can't wait!

Say, any UK readers out there? I'm trying to find an online friend of mine by the name of James Scargill - used to be on Nordinho.net (I'm mugsy_358) and would like to "find" him to see how's he's doing. We didn't keep in touch much over the years I admit, but the last mssages from him last October makes me want to look him up and see how he's doing. I've seen he has a twitter account, a youtube channel, and a linked-in profile, but nothing is very active... Thanks to anyone for at least looking at this. :)

*sigh* Still SSDD so far. Still applying for other jobs within the company, still buying hats and such from etsy (really have to stop that, I need to save money, not spend! *lol*), and looking forward to Mother's Day. Mum has stated she's taking the day off and doing whatever she feels like. Good for her! :) Anyone else have plans for that day?

Anywho, just super thrilled to be able to see Red Dwarf once again and wanted to share with y'all! Have a fantastic weekend everyone!

*cough, cough* A little dusty around here...

Ahem. Anywho... *lol*

It's so windy out there today! "How windy is it?" you ask? Windy enough that poor Toto from the Wizard of OZ just bounced off of one of our office windows. And we're up on the 11th floor!

Well, it wasn't Toto, but something certainly smacked into one of the windows up here - bird? Umbrella? A very confused (and now banged up) Superman? We'll never know for sure...no window damage to speak of, but I'm pretty sure that the occupant of that cubicle might need a fresh pair of skivvies! *LOL*

Yep, still alive. Been busy with the departmental move, but thank goodness that's all over with now. I'm back to carrying the workload of one person (YAY!!), with an extra department added on (but I've been the one doing their work all along anyways so it's no change in my workload). Still, it's like a vacation of sorts, for sure. But there's always work there for those that look for it, right? Currently going through my letter grouping of files and "splitting" them (read: shredding old information and getting slowly prepared for storage already by culling the new paperwork into a new, thinner, folder) Might as well, as this is work that got abandoned during my co-worker's MAT leave so there's plenty to do. Do NOT get me started on my co-worker ;)...Although, my new attitude of "What they choose to do with their day is up to them, as long as it doesn't directly impact my workload" is really serving me well. Look, Ma, I finally grew up and got over myself!! It's such a load off of my shoulders - now all I have to do is watch for the knives in my back...

And yes I have been sewing - to a degree. I've been trying to mend and generally repair a lovely 1940's dress taht a friend of mine was sogenerous in giving me - she thought it wasn't in terrific selling shape, and as her shop has a certain reputation of carrying good quality items Icertainly can't blame her. It's been coming along nicely (where's the pics you ask? On my camera at home while I'm here at the office updating my blog instead oif working hard), but I really need more practice at darning (what can I say, there were a few scattered moth holes - tiny - but I wanted to try and fix them)! I found the perfect colour thread (plum, BTW), but didn't really notice the grey weft in the plum-coloured warp (or did I just get that back-ass-wards?). In any case, the holes are so small you don't really notice my (yucky) darning jobs, but I'm such a perfectionist I hate the fact that they show as much as they do. The shoulder pad osrting out will have to wait until I can post pics of the before and after. And praying I figured them out correctly, as they were quite twisted about and scrunched up. No, I did not remove them as it would destroy the lines of the dress (and the terrific period look).

I also appear to have a vintage hat fetish, sadly. Why so sad? They're costing me money, that's why! *lol* But they're so fantastic (to me, anyways)...yes, pics for them will come too.

Well, must sign off and actually get some work done around the office. Thanks to those that have been patient enough to actually check in from time to time to see if I'm still alive! :)

Short update...

What is it with me getting sick? Sheesh, just getting over a 2-day migraine with stomach troubles. This after that darned Christmas flu and such. I'm blaming it on the Celiac *lol* BTW, I'll be going for iron infusions once every 3 months after I get my February top-up. If my levels get too low, he'll switch it to every 2 months, if they're good or even a bit high (god forbid, the last thing I'll need is Chromatosis), he'll switch it to every 4 months. At least that's srtaightened out.

Dad is OK, but experiencing some joint stiffness (internal swelling?) in his hands and so forth. Still on the 3 Methotrexate on Mondays, so we rarely plan anything for Mondays and Tuesdays sometimes. He's noticed more indigestion / acid reflux over the past couple of months...medication-related? Any ideas? He can take something like Tums for it, but I'd like him to talk to the Doc about something like Zantac (more of an acid inhibitor). Then again, the Zantac would probably affect the meds somehow... At least there's still no visible swelling. I'm assuming that the stiffness is both a part of him "lying around" on Mondays due to the effects of the Methotrexate (sometimes Tuesday too) - let's just say he doesn't feel like being very active on those days - and the rather cold and damp Wimter weather we get here in Toronto. Which seems to be colder and damper than normal this year, or is it just me?

I'm OK, just busy at the office with our departmental move (LOVE how part of that word is "mental" *lol*). Still have the dark purple hair (actually, badly in need of a touch-up still). Still window-shopping on Etsy too much (but made a neat new friend who runs Briony Lodge Vintage there - if you need a vintage hat (mainly 1930s -1940's, with a few from other decades when she can find them) she's your "man"! Her prices are reasonable, and she strives to give the most accurate description she can. And on that note...yours truly will be trying to open a shop there soon! Nothing listed yet, but I thought it might be something fun to try, and why not get a few dollars fr items I'm no longer using or need. Only on a part-time basi, however, as I still have my "regular" job (and plan to keep it, especially in this economy). Not to worry, I'll be making that very clear to any possible patrons (in my main shop description, actually). It's like running a small business, so there are tax implications I need to sort out to my satisfaction. I'm also brewing up a couple of ideas to make my business sustainable - I need to keep posting new things or my shop will get old and stale in no time *lol* There are no real "niche" markets anymore, but I'm hoping to glean some ideas from simple observation of what sells and what I can get the most impact out of (buy low sell high, after all - actually, that should read "buy low, much elbow grease and imagination-using, sell higher than the cost of my work"). Fun times ahead, I guarantee! :)

I certainly post here when I finally get this shop up and running - I'm calling it "Mugsy's Occasional Shop", as I'll only be listing items occasionally to sell. Yep, that's what we call a "groan-er", but it's just kitschy-cute enough to make people take a short look at the shop, I hope... Need to be losing a few pounds (like, 20) to get back into fighting trim. Along with my iron problems, I seem to be lacking in various vitamins and minerals which is apparently fairly common in Celiacs - even after being on the "diet" for a while. Looking into suppliments, but would really rather do it with food somehow. Smoothies perhaps? I don't mean the all fruit types, the sweet ones, but more so veggies and nuts and so forth. Will be looking into that to see what information I can find out there - any Celiacs are more than welcome to comment! :)

Must be off and get back to work - ya'll take care, be well, and enjoy the rest of your day! :)

Must be the new haircolour...

Well, been away for a bit, haven't I? Busy, busy, and all that rot. Actually, busy at work and getting ready for relatives visiting from Saskatchewan next week - yay! Haven't seen the Uncles in forever, SO looking forward to it! :)

Anywho, wanted to post a quick link:

https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/ChronicallyVintage

Shop here, you'll love it! *lol* Actually, it's the brand new etsy shop run by my friend, the lovely and talented Jessica of Chronically Vintage. She has some really nice jewellery posted - if that's your "thing", that is...I know I have a few items "favourited' ;)

Oh, and something else I've taken an interest in...nail art. Seeing as how I can't afford a new wardrobe for now (well, excepting something I find at Value Village), and I have most of what's needed for "playing" with my nails, what the heck, right? one website / blog I've practically fallen in love with is here. She looks like a super-talented lady, and her nails look incredible! :)

Have fun, y'all, and I'll catch ya later!

Merry Boxing Day! *lol*

A little late to be posting my Merry Christmas to y'all, so Boxing Day will have to do! :)

There are terrific sales going on everywhere - even on-line - so sharpen the elbows, people, and get on out there! Chaaaaarrrrrge it!!

Now, I tend to do a fair amount of shopping over on a little site called etsy. It gives me the sense of purchasing items from smaller sellers (as opposed to big-box stores), and fills my little heart with joy. I have a few fave shops of my own that I'd like to share, if you don't mind (and I really hope my linking efforts work):

Adeline's Attic. If you're in need of authentic vintage from the 1910's right on up, this is the place to be. Jill is a knowledgeable and terrific seller, especially regarding the 1920's and 1930's fashions. Her prices may seem a little high to the average shopper, but they are very fair, and you know that you are buying the authentic item. She's a sweet gal to boot, and runs a blog called "Tea With the Vintage Baroness" - and just had a gorgeous haircut (so jealous! *LOL*). Oh, and she's got a second etsy shop which will also become a "bricks and mortar" place called "Moon River Mercantile" in Edmonton! Yay! Someone please purchase that lovely red checked dress at the Mercantile before I do...can't afford it, but it is WONDERFUL!

Another shop that I peruse is called "One More Cup of Tea" run by the lovely and talented Jennifer in Maryland, U.S.A. Plenty of vintage patterns to drool over, and this lady knows her stuff! :) She has got some incredible McCalls patterns posted for sale that I think are really interesting and unique - they are what I personally call "Action" drawings patterns, as the patterns feature some amazing artwork on the front of the sewing pattern "in action" (e.g. these lovely ladies travelling in their freshly made clothes from this pattern look like they're having a terrific time, non?) To me, these illustrated patterns are very unique and should be considered collectables - but they're at such a fabulous price that you should be sure to snap them up while you can! ;)

Now there's "Miss Betty's Attic". This seller is an absolute peach to deal with! Right now she has a whopping 75% off sale going on in her shop! Yes, you read that right, 75% off! She carries sewing patterns from many eras, and one secret I hope to find out eventually - they never have any sort of scent to them! How does she do it?? You know that sometimes you purchase a pattern that's been poorly stored (VERY rarely is it the sellers fault, they usually purchase these things from estate auctions and such) and can smell a little musty, or downright rangy, but any pattern I've ever purchased from this lady must be vacuum sealed in a baking soda environment (or something silly like that) because I've never picked up any kind of scent. In any case, if you're looking for a terrific pattern from almost any era (mainly the 1940's through to the 1980s or even 1990s), this is the place to shop. Did I neglect to mention the 75% off sale that's on right now?? *lol*

I have many other sellers I deal with, but I didn't want to bore the heck outta you by listing each and every one. I've found over time that many of the folks that sell on that site a really nice, and usually very knowledgeable - and if they don't know, they are honest enough to admit it. And that's something I can really appreciate. After all, both the site and the sellers there have a reputation to maintain, and if too many folks were not entirely honest in their dealings, word gets out fast. If you do decide to sign up (free) and shop there, be sure to read the feedback on the sellers. There are also many "clubs" at etsy (e.g. "The etsy Sellers Club" - no link, sorry) where you can learn a little more about pretty much anything, so feel free to look around while you're there.

Well, that was long-winded compared to my usual entries. I do have some pics of Toronto's ice-storm that we chipped our way out of (we were one of the really lucky ones that had power and managed to keep it through the whole thing). We had a terrific Christmas...well any Christmas with the family is terrific, right? Back to work on Friday, off for the weekend, then back for 1 & 1/2 days, off for New Year's Day, then back at it again. When working in an office environment it's always so confusing this time of year - I'm never sure when I'm working or not working, and when working, I sure do miss my nap-times! *LOL*

May you all have had the loveliest of Christmases!

P.S. Sad, but always a favourite of mine - a final chance to say goodbye...
